Vocalist Robyn Adele Anderson of the musical collective and Internet phenomenon Postmodern Jukebox will join the KpopStarz music reviews staff in February.
Under the musical direction of New Orleans-style ragtime pianist Scott Bradlee, Postmodern Jukebox's stylistic reinventions of modern pop songs have received over 36 million views on YouTube.
Though best known for her singing on the Postmodern Jukebox doo-wop cover of Miley Cyrus's "We Can't Stop," Anderson was also singled out by this publication for her performance on the group's cover of "Gentleman" by Psy, which was the KpopStarz Editor's Pick for Best K-pop Cover of 2013.
The vocalist says she couldn't be happier at the opportunity to explore the South Korean musical landscape.
"I genuinely enjoy K-pop music," Anderson said.
When asked about her favorite group, the singer singled out Girls' Generation for their energy and choreography.
"I love the poppiest of pop music with synths and dancing," she said.
Though Postmodern Jukebox is known for their vintage sound, using jazz, klezmer and other musical idioms of the past, Anderson confesses to having more modern tastes.
A former choreographer and dancer, she names her favorite singers as Ke$ha and Mariah Carey.
"When I was little, I thought if I could sing like Mariah Carey I'd be done," Anderson said. "That was always my goal."
And though her group continues to rack up millions of YouTube views, the Postmodern Jukebox vocalist is modest about her newfound celebrity.
"Our fans are so widely spread around the world, that the percentage that actually live in Astoria [where the group is based] is small," Anderson said.
"I've had someone recognize me after I pointed out who I was. I don't know if that counts."
And she is equally modest about the rollercoaster ride she has been on in the last year since Postmodern Jukebox was formed.
"This is completely unexpected," she said. "Being a singer has always been my dream, but I never thought it would happen."
