Celebrity Spotlight Interview with Designer Brothers Terrence and Kevin Kim

Tell us about the story behind IISE.

The idea for IISE came about after we visited Korea for the first time in over 15 years. We were completely blown away by all the Korean culture we were suddenly exposed to and that's when the concept of the brand was born.

Have you and your brother always been interested in creating such a unique men's brand?

We have been interested in fashion since a very young age. I think we were always drawn to minimalism and design because of our mother. A lot of what we make is reflective of her taste and what she had around the house while we were growing up.

What does IISE stand for?

IISE means "2nd generation" in Korean. We try to use certain aspects of our Korean culture and re-interpret them in a more modern way. We will continue to try and create the highest quality products all made in Korea and push a more meaningful story to help spread awareness of the brand and what we are trying to do.

You started off with bags and now have expanded to laptop carriers, lighter holders, and wallets. What else do you have in store for consumers?

We definitely want to expand into clothing very soon! In the future, I want my whole house to be IISE. All the furniture, kitchenware, stationary, everything will be made of high quality materials and have some minimalistic and Korean vibe to it. But for now we'll just stick to accessories...

Where do you want your company to be in the next 3 years?

I think clothing is the next step for us. A lot of our supporters have asked for some Korean inspired clothing and it's something that's been on our minds for a while now. We're also planning to do some collaborations for some household items as well.

Tell us about the Korean influence behind IISE.

At first glance, the Korean influences aren't very obvious. But if you really look at some of the products the stitching patterns, leather patches, even the natural dyeing methods are all from Korea. In our latest collection we incorporated antique lotus rings that were originally for door handles but we used them to attach our shoulder straps to.

While you're working, do you and your brother listen to any K-pop?

Some of the K-pop songs are catchy and we support anything that brings good attention to Korea. We don't listen to K-pop regularly though.. (is this bad to say? LOL)

What's the most interesting aspect about living in Korea?

I think it's a really interesting place to live right now because so much is happening here. Korea is getting more known on a global level and there's a lot of cool and creative work coming from this country that will get some big international attention really soon. I'm stoked!

If you could choose 3 Korean celebrities to rock your brand, who would it be and why?

Any exposure is good exposure for us. I think G-Dragon has really imprinted the fashion world and it'd be cool to see him rock some of our stuff. There are couple female and male models I could see fitting IISE's image well in the future. I'll get to those names when we have a full clothing collection out..

Any last words for our Kpopstarz readers?

Come visit Seoul! That's probably what I tell everyone I know constantly. I grew up my entire life living in the States and there's still so many of my friends and family that haven't experienced Seoul. I'd love to take them around and show them what an exciting city it's becoming.
